Ousmane Sonko was found guilty of defamation against Mame Mbaye Niang. He was thus sentenced to a two-month suspended prison sentence and to pay the plaintiff 200 million CFA francs in damages.

If he commits the same fault, the president of Pastef will pay more. “In the event of a second conviction, he will be considered a repeat offender. He will not only serve his two-month sentence, but also the second sentence is likely to be much more severe”, warns Me Baba Diop in the columns of L’Observateur.
The lawyer predicts that “the judges are not likely to be so lenient with him” because, he underlines, the latter “will consider that this sentence (two months suspended sentence) was not sufficient enough to dissuade him from do the same crime again.
And in this case Ousmane Sonko could say goodbye to his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. All he has to do is to receive a three-month suspended sentence to lose his civil rights.
