GAMBIA: JOINT PRESS RELEASE: DIOMAYE AND BARROW UNDERTAKE TO IMPLEMENT SECURITY AGREEMENTS

The President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, made his first official visit to the Republic of Gambia on Saturday April 20, 2024, accompanied by members of his Government. He was welcomed at the Banjul International Airport by His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, accompanied by members of the government of the Republic of The Gambia.

This visit, which is one of the first made by His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye since his inauguration, underlines the importance of the deep and close fraternal ties between The Gambia and Senegal.

It further symbolizes the deep and shared desire of the two Heads of State to promote the spirit of affinity and reciprocal esteem for mutually beneficial collaboration between the governments and people of the two countries.

The two Heads of State discussed the state of historic bilateral relations between The Gambia and Senegal and, in this regard, reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the Presidential Council established with a view to continuing to bring the situation to a strategic level. cooperation that exists between the two countries.

His Excellency President Adama Barrow congratulated President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye on his resounding electoral victory and his inauguration as the 5th Head of State of the Republic of Senegal, and wished him great success in the implementation of the programs innovators of his recently constituted government.

His Excellency President Adama Barrow also thanked His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for making his second foreign visit to Gambian soil and described it as a clear testimony of the historical and fraternal ties that exist between The Gambia and Senegal.

The two Heads of State expressed their great satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations between The Gambia and Senegal and underlined the consubstantial nature of the links which unite the two countries due to the fact that they are inextricably linked by history, geography, culture, common development aspirations, and further welcomed the various efforts made to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in many sectors.

The two leaders reaffirmed the firm desire of their governments to continue working together to advance the excellent bilateral relations that fortunately exist between the two sister Republics and, in this regard, they agreed to intensify consultations between the authorities of the two governments to implement agreements signed on security, defense, forest and wildlife management, trade, air transport, education and the justice system.

The two Heads of State also discussed various topics and developments at the regional, continental and global levels and agreed to continue consultations and cooperation on issues of common interest. The two leaders recognized the contributions of the two countries to peace, security and development through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Organization of the African Union ( OAU), the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), etc.

His Excellency President Adama Barrow renewed his invitation to His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for the 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which will be held on May 4 and 5, 2024 in Banjul and thanked the government and the Senegalese people for the support provided to ensure the success of the organization of the Summit. His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed his appreciation and acceptance to participate in the summit in Banjul.

His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye expressed his sincere thanks to His Excellency President Adama BARROW, the government and people of The Gambia for the warm and fraternal welcome as well as the generous hospitality extended to him and to his delegation and congratulated His Excellency President Barrow in advance for the Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The two heads of state agreed to consult regularly on matters of mutual interest and to hold the next session of the Senegalese-Gambian Presidential Council in Dakar, in the Republic of Senegal, on dates to be fixed later.
