A former Brigadier General who departed the Gambia Armed Forces after Yahya Jammeh’s departure from the country’s shores has surrendered to the aforementioned armed forces, according to the Gambia Armed Forces.
Bora Colley, who is purportedly a former member of the notorious “Junglers” killing squad of former President Yahya Jammeh, departed the Gambia in 2017.
After voluntarily surrendering himself to the GAF Military Police at Yundum Barracks on Friday, August 9, 2024, at approximately midnight, former General Colley was held under custody, according to information from GAF’s Facebook page.
After receiving information that the former General was in the vicinity of his residence in the Greater Banjul Area on that particular day, the GAF’s intelligence operatives implemented surveillance.
In the interim, it is reported that Mr. Colley is presently being held in custody and is assisting the GAF Military Police in their investigations.
In due course, the public will be provided with additional information regarding the former General’s entry into the country and the duration of his stay in The Gambia, among other matters, according to military sources.
Mr. Colley was a senior Army officer in the Gambia Armed Forces during the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh. The ‘Junglers’, of which he was a member, were a secret paramilitary unit that was responsible for some of the most severe human rights abuses during Jammeh’s rule. These abuses included extra-judicial killings, torture, and enforced disappearances.
Colley successfully eluded justice for several years by fleeing The Gambia after Jammeh was removed from office through the ballot box in January 2017. Colley’s whereabouts were unknown until yesterday, August 10, 2024, when the GAF announced that he voluntarily surrendered to the Military Police at Yundum Barracks around midnight on August 9, 2024.
The detention of Colley is a critical moment in the Gambia’s pursuit of accountability for the crimes of the past, and the public is closely monitoring these developments as they represent a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring justice to the victims of the Jammeh regime’s atrocities.
