Former International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, has recently joined the Board of Trustees for eyeWitness to Atrocities. Founded by the International Bar Association (IBA), eyeWitness confirmed her appointment, acknowledging her exceptional contributions to global justice.

Expressing her honour at joining the eyeWitness Board of Trustees, Ms Bensouda highlighted the opportunity to contribute to a noble cause.

Her expertise in international law and criminal justice is well-known, notably during her tenure at the ICC from 2012 to 2021, where she actively pursued accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Her legal career includes roles as a legal adviser in Tanzania and as Minister of Justice and Attorney-General in The Gambia.

Recognition of her commitment to justice comes through prestigious awards such as the 2011 World Peace Through Law Award and acknowledgment in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list.

Dr Mark Ellis, the originator of eyeWitness and IBA Executive Director, praised Bensouda’s pivotal role in pursuing justice for severe crimes, welcoming her as a significant addition to the Board of Trustees.

Carrie Bowker, eyeWitness Director, expressed gratitude for Bensouda’s commitment to human rights, envisioning advancements in their mission due to her joining the board.

Ms Fatou Bensouda joins a distinguished Board of Trustees, alongside prominent figures such as Mark Ellis, Almudena Arpón de Mendívil Aldama, Richard Goldstone, and others.

The eyeWitness to Atrocities app, an award-winning tool, allows documenting verifiable evidence of human rights violations using mobile phones. The app embeds necessary metadata to authenticate footage, making it admissible in court. Over 65,000 pieces of evidence have been captured and stored securely, aiding various international accountability mechanisms.

Fatou Bensouda’s inclusion in eyeWitness signifies a boost in their efforts towards ensuring accountability for mass atrocities through robust documentation and legal action.
