On January 19, 2024, Gambian President Adama Barrow pardoned 37 inmates, including Dr. Bamba Banja, a former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries, in an act of mercy. Dr. Banja was incarcerated in Mile-2 jail for two years after being found guilty of corruption.

Due to the fact that Dr. Banja was a senior government official found guilty of corruption, his case attracted a lot of attention. He was found guilty of corruption and given a mandatory two-year prison sentence along with a D1.1 million fine.
