A Dakar court is examining this Tuesday, December 12, the reinstatement or not of the opponent Ousmane Sonko on the electoral lists, on which his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election depends.
On November 17, the Supreme Court in Senegal overturned a judgment rendered in October, which had put Mr. Sonko back in the presidential race by annulling his removal from the electoral lists following a conviction in the Adji Sarr case.
The Court decided that the case should be retried in first instance by the Dakar court.
Ousmane Sonko was removed from the electoral roll following his conviction in June to two years in prison for youth corruption.
The mayor of Ziguinchor denounces this affair and others of which he is the subject as machinations aimed at excluding him from the presidential election. Power defends itself against any exploitation of justice.
The removal of Mr. Sonko makes him ineligible for the 2024 presidential election if confirmed. It gave rise to a legal battle led by its lawyers against the State, engaged for more than two years in a standoff with the opponent which triggered several episodes of deadly unrest.
Mr. Sonko was imprisoned at the end of July on other charges, including calling for insurrection, criminal conspiracy in connection with a terrorist enterprise and endangering state security.
