GAMBIA: AHMED JITTEH SAYS HE WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN NEXT TUESDAY’S PRIMARY

Ahmed Gitteh, one of the leading contenders in the National People’s Party (NPP) primaries held in Brikama to select their candidate for the BAC Chair, claimed he won last Wednesday’s contentious primary and therefore will not participate in next Tuesday’s rerun announced by the party’s National Executive.

“A lot of people are asking especially my supporters who believe and know that I won the last NPP Primary. We know the NPP presiding officers didn’t just stop at campaigning for Seedy Ceesay, giving people money to vote for him but they took my win and give it to him. The person that they wanted to win didn’t win. Because that’s what they want and they are powerful, they called for another primary next Tuesday. I had rumors of both Seedy Ceesay and I have agreed to go for the primary. I swear that I am the winner of the primary,” he said.

Ahmed Gitteh says he didn’t discuss the scheduled Tuesday’s primary rerun with anybody and will not discuss it with anyone;

“I don’t discuss with anyone that I will be going for a primary and I will not discuss it with anyone because I have won, why will I go for primary? I am not going for any primary and I am not going to discuss it with anyone. They were the players at the same time referees, they did everything to anger and shamed me. If you take my win from me because you are powerful, no problem, I will not be angry, I will not insult you and I will not quarrel with you. You can do what you want. Everyone should know that the primary is not in line with the party’s principles,” he said.

Ahmed Gitteh is contesting the results of Wednesday’s primaries. He contended that he had thirty-one votes, which was disputed by the officials conducting the elections because a chewed gum found in his ballot box was ruled an ineligible vote
