GAMBIA: YOUR RECENT PROGRAMME ON: ‘HOW TO CHANGE ATTITUDES FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT’

Dear Mr Njie,

Your recent programme on changing attitudes for development was incredibly insightful, addressing social, economic, and cultural aspects of our society. I was particularly struck by the discussion between you and your panelists on how society once operated like a web, where interconnectedness and mutual support helped many overcome hardships. This historical context, which I also explore in my book, offers valuable lessons.

However, while we cannot return to the ‘golden old days,’ we must focus on shifting our attitudes and identifying the tools needed to achieve system change and sustainable development.

This is not as straightforward as it may seem—it requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses cultural, economic, and educational dimensions, all framed to suit our societal needs. Government must lead this effort, ensuring that all stakeholders are involved, leaving no one behind.

Education and Awareness: We need comprehensive education reform that fosters critical thinking, innovation, and civic responsibility. To shape future generations, subjects like national development, social cohesion, and sustainability should be central to the curriculum.

Inclusive Prosperity: As you often mentioned on the programme, our previous collective system was vital to societal functioning. We need to revive this mindset, promoting collective well-being, cooperation, and discouraging individualism. Public campaigns that celebrate social progress and encourage community building will be crucial in changing attitudes at the grassroots level.

Leadership and Public Figures: National leaders and public figures must lead by example, embodying values such as integrity, hard work, and social responsibility. Their advocacy and role-modelling can shift public opinion and inspire societal changes toward development-driven initiatives.

Policy Reform: The National Development Plan under Barrow’s Government, though well-written, remains dormant. It must be revived with a focus on transparency, equity, and accountability. Incentives should be provided to social enterprises and ethical businesses, changing the perception of economic success. Policies should also encourage youth participation in politics, community work, and entrepreneurship.

Cultural Influence and Media: Media must play a positive role in promoting national development goals and shaping societal values. National pride, cultural innovation, and social unity are essential in fostering a sense of responsibility for national development.

Grassroots Mobilisation: Communities must be engaged at all levels to participate in local projects, especially those that promote ownership and accountability. Projects related to agriculture, healthcare, and education can inspire proactive attitudes and greater community involvement.

Economic Opportunities: The National Plan must prioritize creating economic opportunities through entrepreneurship, jobs, and skills training. When society experiences the tangible benefits of development efforts, people are more likely to support national achievements.

In summary, changing attitudes towards national development requires addressing education, leadership, policy, and community engagement. A well-crafted and implemented National Development Plan can gradually shift societal values and promote shared prosperity. Countries like Rwanda and the Tiger economies have achieved this, and I believe we can too!

Saul Jawara.
