President Adama Barrow has once again reaffirmed his government’s commitment to addressing the welfare of farmers in the country, assuring that there will be good prices for farmers in this year’s groundnut trade season.

Speaking to journalists at the  Banjul Ferry Terminal as he begins his nationwide constitutional requirement tour, the Gambian leader said: “I have good news for Gambian farmers. I have a big news for them and I will break the news during the tour. I am quite sure that we will give them a good price,” he said while responding to a question about this year’s tonnes of groundnut.

During the tour, the president is expected to meet with Gambians and listen to their concerns with a view to addressing them. The tour will also avail him the opportunity to roll out his government’s development priorities.

He is expected to hold over 19 public meetings and 26 spot visits to development projects across the country relating to agriculture, education, health and youth entrepreneurship.

Speaking further, he said: “The tour is a constitutional requirement and that is why we discuss with Gambians and dialogue with them and listen to their concerns with a view to enable the government come out with a policy in trying to address their concerns and challenges.”

“We are employed by the people. Therefore, we want to go out and listen to them so that we can roll out the government development aspirations to their doorsteps,” he said.

President Barrow also calls for national unity, saying: “National unity is key to enable the government continue it socio-economic development in the country. There can’t be any meaningful development in the absence of unity. We want all hands on deck so that we can move this country forward,” he stressed.

The government of The Gambia under his leadership, he added, is more than willing to work with Gambians in order to develop the country, further claiming: “We will go and listen to Gambians so that we can move this country forward and improve their lives and livelihoods of all.”

“This is government that is tolerant. This is a government that is building a strong foundation. If we unite, we will definitely move this country forward,” he postulated.
