The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has officially verified the unfortunate demise of a female checked-in passenger at Banjul International Airport.

In an announcement on their Facebook page, the GCAA expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It is with profound sadness that the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) informs the general public about the tragic passing of a female checked-in passenger at Banjul International Airport. This regrettable incident occurred at approximately 19:35 in the evening on Sunday, October 15, 2023, as the passenger was awaiting her Turkish Airlines flight.”

According to GCAA, the passenger had completed the customary check-in procedures and protocols, entered the terminal departure lounge, and taken a moment to rest. Later, she ventured to the Duty Free shop adjacent to the waiting lounge, known for its cooler temperature due to its merchandise offerings. Regrettably, while browsing through the shop, the passenger suddenly lost consciousness.

“She then decided to visit the Duty Free shop adjacent to the waiting lounge, which, by virtue of its business offerings, is the coldest in the departure lounge. Within seconds of entering the shopping space, the passenger passed out while window shopping,” they explained.

Upon receiving the alert, a team comprising relevant GCAA and state public health personnel swiftly responded to the emergency. They promptly commandeered the airport ambulance and transported the deceased to Banjulinding Health Center for immediate medical attention. Tragically, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority also confirmed that it had duly notified the British High Commission of this development.
