GAMBIA: GOVERNMENT GOES AGAINST NATIONAL DIALOGUE, SAYS HON. OUSAINOU DARBOE

Darboe pointed out that the country’s five-year-old president is a failure for proposing a discussion on what is essentially the central role of the administration he heads.

It is not appropriate to refer to his political rivals’ invitations to speak as a meaningful national conversation. It is more akin to a staged parody disguising itself as a thoughtful discussion about a country confronting grave issues.

The UDP leader urges the president to acknowledge the profound and grave issues the nation is facing, stating that the first is that he must calm down and give up the dangerous polarisation he and his allies have brought into the political system.
It will be horrifying to demand national unity from a government that has shattered and severely polarised families, communities, and even neighbourhoods in the name of gaining political power.

In addition to stressing that drugs are spreading throughout our society, killing our youth, and corroding the foundation of government, he exhorts the president to recognise the threat that drugs pose to our nation.

“In any community where they are common, drugs and drug usage immediately raise crime rates, and this threat is the closest thing we have to a national emergency. An inter-agency taskforce that includes the Drug Law Agency, the police, military, SIS, and other law enforcement agencies, as well as local councils, religious leaders, and volunteers at the ward level, must be assembled by the president with the sole purpose of addressing drugs and their impact on the nation.

He emphasised the necessity for the Barrow administration to combat corruption among other things.
