By Ramatoulie Jawo

Hon. Dawda A. Jallow, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice told the National Assembly on Tuesday that his ministry has taken over the issue of rental housing in the Gambia.

“I am now happy to inform this August Assembly that the Ministry of Justice has taken ownership, and we will be the sector responsible for the rent. As a result, we are now working on brand-new legislation to govern the rent industry Because the rent industry is one sector in this country that is not regulated properly,” he said.

The Justice Minister announced that his ministry is drafting new legislation to regulate the rental market. This legislation will ensure that both landlords and tenants have their rights protected.

The Attorney General said that the new legislation will be a “win-win” for both landlords and tenants. He said that landlords will be able to rent out their properties with confidence, knowing that their rights will be protected. He also said that tenants will be treated fairly and that they will be able to find affordable and safe housing.

The Justice Minister announced that his team is working on a bill and expects to bring it to Parliament by the National Assembly’s last session this year. He said that the drafting process is underway.

The Attorney General told Parliament that his ministry is now responsible for all matters related to rent. He said that they have taken on this responsibility.
