Serrekunda West’s legislator, Madi M.K. Ceesay, stated that President Adama Barrow is diligently working on the draft constitution in order to establish a lasting legacy.
“President Barrow’s desire to establish a lasting impact may have motivated the dialogue, as he aims to create a new constitution,” Ceesay expressed.
He stated that the constitutional reforms gathering of NAMs on Monday and Tuesday was a part of an endeavour to revive the failed draft constitution. He highlighted that the transformation initiated in 2016 remains unfinished due to the government’s failure to fulfil its commitment of implementing a new constitution.
NAM Ceesay expressed his belief that the success of the National Dialogue will facilitate the smooth approval of the proposed constitution when it is reintroduced to Parliament.
Parliament is a legislative body comprised of multiple political parties. If the dialogue is successful, then the policies will gradually disseminate to the members. “If the draft constitution is brought to the assembly, it will be approved,” he asserted.
He emphasised that in the event of political parties’ disagreement during the discussion, the draft will fail, as it happened in the fifth legislature. He emphasised the need for political parties to transcend their differences and facilitate the passage of the document.
Between 2016 and 2019, there was agreement on many matters, but there were other areas where consensus could not be reached. These unresolved topics should be their main focus. NAM Ceesay emphasised the need to thoroughly examine the presidential term limit and other related matters in order to facilitate the creation of a new constitution for The Gambia.
