Dear Concern Gambians,
It is indeed disheartening to receive complaints from Sabach Sanjal residents alleging that NPP militants, in collaboration with the MP, are distributing membership cards at a cost of 150 dalasis This practice is exploitative and manipulative, undermining the residents’ decision-making processes.
The situation is further attached to threats that individuals without the membership card will be denied government support, confusing the constitution’s principles of equity in resource distribution and freedom of decision-making. It is significant that we prevent the manipulation of the electorate and ensure that residents are not forced into making uninformed decisions, which could compromise election credibility and fairness.
Many Sabach Sanjal residents, particularly women, struggle to afford ID cards, hindering their access to healthcare and daily activities. Instead of addressing this issue, the NPP is reportedly charging 150 dalasis for membership cards, aiming to increase party support. This practice warrants close monitoring by the IEC to prevent electoral fraud and malpractice, which could destabilize the country.
Political parties should promote their agendas transparently, allowing citizens to make informed decisions. Voter inducement must be disallowed, as it undermines election credibility and fairness. I am disappointed by the authorities’ involvement in this practice and urge the MP to prioritize the constituency’s interests over party politics.
Sabach Sanjal is a poor constituency, and misguided decisions have contributed to its poverty. It is important that we address these issues to ensure a fair and credible electoral process 2026.
