GAMBIA: THE ALLEGED KILLER OF 2 POLICE OFFICERS IS A ‘CASAMANCE REBEL’ SAYS ABUBAKARR JENG

Abubakarr S. Jeng, the national security adviser has revealed that the suspect in Sukuta-Jabang Traffic Lights shooting had told investigators that he was a “rebel” who had fought in the Cassamance rebellion.

According to Mr. Jeng who was responding questions from journalists at Friday’s press briefing at the Police Headquarters, the suspect revealed it was during the Cassamance rebellion that he obtained the gun.

“So, far six (6) persons of interest are in Police custody excluding the alleged suspect. The investigators are focused on establishing the possible motive of this dastardly act whether it was alone, individual or a group,” Mr. Jeeng told journalists.

According to him the crime scene was well managed, and a team of investigators will be conducting crime scene reconstruction to further determine key circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General Momodou Sowe of the Gambia Police Force has made it clear that the suspect has no connection with any security institution in the country.

He also disclosed that they had significant leads in their investigation that the suspect was totally implicated. According to him, the suspect has possessed the weapon for a very long time and that the weapon was with him during the court sitting in Banjul.

“The dress and boots he was identified with were all recovered by the investigators. There are so many positive leads indicating the suspect being an accomplice or being the perpetrators of this crime,” he revealed to journalists.

Seyaka Sonko, the minister of Interior advised the public not to be giving out information they know nothing about, adding that certain information from the public might distract Police investigators while on duty.
