The United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Secretary General, Ousainou Darboe, has decried the weaponization of the country’s enforcement body against his party. He denounced the use of the Police as ‘a means of oppression and suppression.’
He made this statement during a press conference held on Saturday at the party headqarter in Manjaikunda, some 10 km away from Banjul.
Lawyer Darboe cited the case of a party militant who was called for questioning by the Police but was detained the following day after a prominent President Barrow’ supporter called for her arrest.
“The Police did not act on their own volition. They did not act on their own discretion,” he deplored. “They were forced and pushed into it by a gentleman who called himself an APRC official.”
According to him, a similar move was taken by Ousman Rambo Jatta two days back as he unleashed hell on Momodou Sabally, Sheriffo Sonko and Imam Sonko. He subsequently called for their arrest.
He further stated that the trio were later called for questioning.
“It is political opponents of the UDP that are using the Police for their own political agenda.”
