New Governing Councils Appointed for Gambia’s Public Universities

The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) has announced the appointment of new Governing Councils for public universities, effective from December 1, 2024.

These appointments are seen as a significant step in enhancing higher education governance in The Gambia.

The new councils will oversee the University of The Gambia (UTG), the University of Education Gambia (UEG) formerly Gambia College, and the Civil Service University (CSU) formerly the Management Development Institute (MDI). The councils are tasked with providing strategic leadership, oversight, and policy guidance to ensure these institutions deliver quality education and foster innovation.

The governing councils comprise distinguished individuals from various sectors, including academia, government, civil society, and the private sector. Their expertise is expected to drive the universities towards achieving their educational missions.

University of The Gambia (UTG) Council:

  • Chairperson: Professor Mustapha M. Fanneh
  • Vice Chairperson: Nahla Tambadou
  • Members: Dr. Ebrima Sall, Salama Njie, Imam Baba Leigh, Governor West Coast Region, Vice Chancellor, University Registrar (Secretary), President Students’ Union

University of Education Gambia (UEG) Council:

  • Chairperson: Dr. Alieu Badara Senghore
  • Vice Chairperson: Cecilia Baldeh
  • Members: Fodeh Baldeh, Essa Sowe, Essa Darboe, Governor West Coast Region, Vice Chancellor/Rector, University Registrar (Secretary), President Students’ Union

Civil Service University (CSU) Council:

  • Chairperson: Dr. Burama Jammeh
  • Vice Chairperson: Njundu Fatty
  • Members: Professor Gibril Faal, Fr. David J. Jarju, Antoinette Corr, Executive Coordinator KM, Vice Chancellor/Rector, University Registrar (Secretary), President Students’ Union

According to MoHERST, key government officials will serve on the councils, including the Permanent Secretaries from MoFEA, MoJ, MoHERST, MoBSE, and the Public Service.
