In a tragic turn of events, Mafugi Manneh, an 18-year-old asylum seeker from the Gambia, lost his life after being viciously attacked in Canelli’s Piazza Carlo Gancia on the evening of Tuesday, April 30 by Pakistani migrants. The assault, which was captured by video surveillance cameras and witnessed by bystanders, was reportedly sparked by an ongoing conflict between two groups residing at a local migrant reception center.

According to initial investigations, the altercation between the Gambian and Pakistani groups, living at the reception center in Cassinasco, had been escalating for days, particularly regarding kitchen management issues.

The confrontation turned violent when a Pakistani migrant struck Manneh with the anti-theft chain of a bicycle, inflicting severe head injuries.

Despite immediate medical attention and being airlifted to the hospital in Alexandria, Mafugi Manneh succumbed to his injuries in the intensive care unit. Doctors, faced with the severity of the head trauma, were unable to save him.

Following the incident, the carabinieri swiftly apprehended the alleged attacker, a 20-year-old Pakistani migrant, who is now facing charges of murder.

Additionally, another 24-year-old Pakistani migrant has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the attack.

The tragic death of Nafugi Manneh has shocked the community and prompted further investigation into the circumstances leading up to the fatal assault. The carabinieri are continuing their inquiries, interviewing witnesses and residents of the reception center, to ensure that justice is served for the young victim.
