The daily EnQuête reported that the Constitutional Council took significant decisions concerning the organization of the presidential election in Senegal. According to the newspaper, the Council rejected the proposal to hold the elections on June 2, as suggested by the Conclusions of the National Dialogue. He also maintained the invalidation of the candidacy of Karim Wade, while confirming the list of 19 candidates validated to participate in the election.
The Constitutional Council also ruled on the end of the current mandate of President Macky Sall, which will end on April 2. This decision clarifies the Senegalese political landscape as the next presidential election approaches.
The recommendations resulting from the National Dialogue had underlined the need to organize the presidential election during the month of June 2024, ideally on June 2, and to maintain the 19 candidates already validated by the Constitutional Council. They also called for a re-examination of applications to address issues of dual nationality and the necessary adjustments regarding the sponsorship of candidates, particularly those feeling harmed by the current system, described as “spoiled” or “failed”.
However, the newspaper did not provide information on a new date proposed for the presidential election by the Constitutional Council, nor on the provisions concerning the post-mandate transition of President Macky Sall, initially planned to continue after 02 April until the installation of his successor, in accordance with the conclusions of the National Dialogue.
