SENEGAL: PRIME MINISTER OUSMANE SONKO, YET TO FORM A GOVERNMENT

It has now been three days since the leader of the Pastef Party, Ousmane Sonko, was appointed prime minister. After the news was announced, the latter promised to submit a government proposal to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye “in the following hours”. However, the first government of the Diomaye Faye era was slow to form and tongues were gradually loosening over the reasons for this “delay”.
If some believe that this is due to a “morality investigation” for the chosen profiles, others whisper that disagreements would have arisen between Pastef activists who demand more consideration and the allies.
In any case, Senegal is eagerly awaiting this new government which will embody “the rupture” promised by the new President of the Republic. A break which, according to some, must begin with a rationalization of the government. An act that President Macky Sall was able to implement after his election in 2012. With Abdoul Mbaye as Prime Minister, this government had 25 members including 6 women with a fleeting lifespan: one year, four months and 28 days. It will be dissolved on September 2, 2013.
Abdoul Mbaye is replaced by the Minister of Justice at the time, Aminata Touré. The latter composes a government of 31 ministers. The policy of small government was quickly abandoned. At the end of his second term, Macky Sall found himself with a government of 39 ministers.
For his part, Ousmane Sonko is faced with the dilemma of avoiding sharing a cake while managing frustrations.
