The European Union joins in the concert of disapproval of the postponement of the Senegalese presidential election, ordering President Macky Sall on Wednesday to hold the said elections on February 25, 2024.

Unanimous concern about the interruption of the electoral process on February 3, by President Macky Sall, frustrates the international community and other organizations that invite things to be put back in the right place.

Among other things, the indignation of the European Union, stressing that the Senegalese electoral calendar must be respected. The Presidential election must be held on the due date, i.e., February 25, 2024.

“The EU is very concerned about the postponement of the presidential vote. This postponement tarnishes the long tradition of democracy in Senegal and opens a period of great uncertainty,” declares Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for the European Commission.

The EU “urges the political class to quickly take the necessary measures aimed at restoring the electoral calendar in accordance with the constitution of Senegal and the ECOWAS charter.”.

The European Union also denounces the fact that this major decision, which concerns a key moment in the democratic exercise by all citizens, took place without close consultation with all political actors in an inclusive and transparent manner.
