The management of Gamtel/Gamcel appears to be based on nepotism, with key positions predominantly held by individuals from Badibu, including the Managing Director a Badibunka, Finance Director a Badibunka, Technical Director Badibunka, HR Director Badibunka, and Audit Director Badibunka.
Lamin Tunkara, the Managing Director, is ineffective and has lost sight of the company’s strategic direction. Muhammad Jammeh, the HR Director, has severely demotivated the staff by placing his personal interests above their welfare. Meanwhile, Kebba Kinteh, the Finance Director, has shown incompetence by failing to pay salaries on time, often resulting in delayed payments that stretch into the following month. His conduct suggests corruption and a lack of financial understanding.
The focus of the entire management seems to be on misappropriating public funds and resources, such as fuel coupons. Gamtel was established under president Jawara’s regime through parliamentary action, followed by the creation of GTMI, a training school within the company. President Jammeh’s regime later established both GRTS, the state-owned television station, and Gamcel, the GSM company.
Currently, under president Barrow”s regime, Gamtel/Gamcel has undergone significant staff reductions, with 600 out of 1007 employees removed from service due to redundancy, leaving only 350 staff members.
