Boat builder charged as Police target ‘backway’ supply networksPolice in the North Bank Region have charged a boat builder accused of constructing vessels used for irregular migration.Modou Jaine Joof, identified by investigators as the craftsman behind boats allegedly prepared for trafficking operations, was charged alongside alleged agents Modou Muctarr Mbye and Abdoulie Jallow. The trio face counts of human trafficking, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences. The Gambia Police Force said targeting boat makers and other logistical actors is part of a broader strategy to dismantle every link in the irregular migration chain, not only those who recruit or collect money from migrants.Joof and his co-accused were arraigned before Magistrate Ebou Sowe at the Essau Magistrates’ Court on 11 November.During the same proceedings, Tam Ceesay was convicted and fined D25,000, with a two-year custodial sentence in default. The remaining accused were remanded as the case was adjourned to 24 December.Police said operations across the region will continue as authorities move to disrupt trafficking infrastructure and prevent young Gambians from embarking on perilous journeys.
