THE GAMBIA’S BACK WAY CRISIS: A Call for Urgent Action
Professor Mballow, Social and Political analyst
The recent statement by Minister Ismaila Ceesay downplaying the intensity of the Back Way crisis has sparked outrage and concern among Gambians. The harsh reality is that the crisis has indeed intensified, with more young Gambians risking their lives on perilous journeys to Europe.
What’s Gone Wrong?
Inadequate government response to the root causes of migration, such as poverty and lack of opportunities.
Insufficient support for migrants and their families.
Weak border control and surveillance.
Limited access to safe and legal migration channels.
Steps to Address the Crisis:
Strengthen border management: Enhance surveillance, intelligence, and law enforcement to prevent irregular migration.
Address root causes: Invest in economic development, job creation, and social programs to reduce poverty and inequality.
Protect migrants’ rights: Provide support and protection for Gambian migrants, including those who have been victims of trafficking or abuse.
Promote safe migration: Establish safe and legal migration channels, and provide information and counseling to potential migrants.
Regional cooperation: Collaborate with regional and international partners to address the root causes of migration and share responsibility.
The government must take immediate action to address the Back Way crisis, prioritizing the safety and well-being of Gambian migrants.
