The United States said on Saturday it was “concerned and saddened” by the violence that has shaken Senegal since Thursday and called for a return to calm.

“We urge all parties to express their views peacefully,” Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, said in a statement. Fifteen people have died since Thursday following the two-year prison sentence for opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
