A leaked audio shared by What’s On – Gambia between Seedy Njie Deputy Speaker and the GRTS journalist Omar Jallow.
By Lamin Sey
What’s On – Gambia as a person of Fulani descent, I consider it necessary to voluntarily assist with the translation for the benefit of all.
SEEDY NJIE:
Omar, isn’t Buba Carr Darboe still with you guys at GRTS?
OMAR:
Yes, he is.
SEEDY NJIE:
Do you know why he was removed from his appointment? Do you know the real reason behind it?
OMAR:
No, I am not sure.
SEEDY NJIE:
I made sure it happened, and after his removal, the minister contacted me and appealed for his reinstatement. I told the minister that Bubacarr is a strong critic of President Barrow and one of his biggest critic on social media. The minister continued to advocate for him, saying that Bubacarr was his relative and that they came from the same village and he will make sure he will do everything in his power for baboucarr become a 100% barrow supporter. Later, I raised the matter directly with the President, asking why Bubacarr had been appointed. The President responded that he had been recommended by the minister. I then told the President that the minister had misled him and lied to him regarding that recommendation and insisted that Bubacarr’s appointment should be suspended immediately. The President agreed.
OMAR:
(Responding to allegations that he had once had a confrontation with the DPS)
Before leaving for Cameroon, I had an encounter with the DPS.
SEEDY NJIE (interrupting):
Do you know that your DPS is also a UDP member?
OMAR:
I cannot confirm that, and it is not my concern and business.
SEEDY NJIE:
Of course, he is a UDP member.
OMAR:
What I am trying to do is clarify the allegation that I had a fight with the DPS. The only incident I can recall was when I had been editing my work until around 4:00 a.m., as I was required to submit my reports back home on a daily basis. Later, when my colleagues woke me to accompany them to the Vice President’s hotel, I asked them to go ahead while I rested briefly because I had slept very late.
When I woke up, I contacted Protocol Officer Mr. Ceesay to arrange transportation for me to join them at the Vice President’s residence. Upon my arrival, the DPS confronted me and asked why I had come late. I explained that it was not intentional and that I had been up all night working on my editing assignments. He responded by saying that I was not the only person who prepared reports and that everyone else also had reporting responsibilities.
I then explained that my reports were different because mine were required to be sent back home every day, whereas others could wait until the delegation returned. That is the only encounter I can remember having with the DPS, and I do not recall ever having a quarrel with him elsewhere.
SEEDY NJIE:
Isn’t the DPS a Mandinka?
OMAR:
Yes, he is a Mandinka from Badibu.
OMAR: (continued explaining)
As I said, that is the only interaction I remember having with him. I do not recall any argument or confrontation beyond that.
SEEDY NJIE (addressing the delegates):
The reason I called you all here is because I receive a lot of information. As for the DPS, I will ensure that he is thoroughly scrutinized because he is also a UDP sympathizer. I will personally raise this matter with the President and make it clear that Omar’s DPS is a UDP member. I will also call the DPS directly, confront him, and make sure he is dismissed.
You are all welcome.
