The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence and Security (SCDS) has suggested that the government arm the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) with more weapons, including AK-47s and handguns.

Following a nationwide tour of security institutions, the Standing Committee on Defence and Security released its report shortly after the suggestion.

The member for Jeshwang and head of the committee, Hon. Sheriff Sarr, presented the findings.

The government should establish standardized communication infrastructure for the whole security industry, according to the report’s recommendations.

It also suggested that the government upgrade the Serekunda and Brikama Fire and Rescue Stations and furnish them with furnishings and fittings, as well as provide the Gambia Police Force and Armed Forces more patrol cars.

The Report urges the National Assembly to give defense and security matters top priority in order to improve national security, and suggests that the government “should provide the Gambia Prison Services with prisoner vans; renovate and expand the Remand Wing and detention centers.”

The Committee also advised that the Gambia Police Force promptly address the problem of basic office supplies and equipment to all major police stations, and that the Gambia Armed Forces engage NAWEC “immediately” to expand power to military garrisons, such as Kafuta Tumbung.

Additionally, the report recommended that the government “immediately settle travel (night) allowance to personnel of”

“Gambia Prison Service” and direct that all staff get their owed nightly stipend in compliance with the law and regulation.

After much discussion, NAMs endorsed the report.
