Almameh Fanding Taal, the spokesperson for the United Democratic Party (UDP), has asserted that Momodou Sabally’s recent shift to the National People’s Party (NPP) will not shake the UDP. Furthermore, Taal categorically denies any intentions of joining the NPP himself.

In an interview with Freedom Radio, Taal acknowledged the close relationship between Sabally and UDP leader Ousainu Darboe, highlighting Darboe’s character as someone who values simplicity, goodness, and the presumption of innocence. Despite potential personal disappointment, Taal expressed Darboe’s maturity in understanding Sabally’s decision.

“Those unfamiliar with the honourable Ousainu Darboe simply haven’t had the privilege of knowing him. He embodies simplicity and goodness. If you were to share information about someone with him, he would reserve judgment until he personally met that individual and heard the same details directly. As a lawyer, he upholds the principle of presumption of innocence in all matters.

“This outlook extends to all aspects of his life. His closeness with Sabally was evident through shared lunches, the most recent being a celebration at a Senegambia restaurant following Darboe’s victory in MC Cham’s case at the Supreme Court. Darboe’s affability and compassion for everyone are noteworthy. While he may not be pleased with the decision, he possesses the maturity to comprehend the reasons behind Mr. Sabally’s actions.” Taal Said.

Addressing concerns about the UDP’s stability following Sabally’s departure, Taal drew parallels to past instances, such as Lamin Wa Juwara leaving the party. He emphasized that despite initial speculations of the party’s demise, the UDP remained resilient and continued to thrive under the leadership of individuals with a strong sense of self-belief and historical grounding.

“When Lamin Wa Juwara left the party, there were widespread speculations about its demise, given his influential status as a prominent Gambian with significant positions. He possessed excellent oratory skills, and many considered him more than an ordinary individual. Similarly, Sabally, with his prominence, is not an ordinary Gambian. However, the party is led by individuals who have confidence in themselves and a rich historical background,” he emphasized.

Regarding his own political allegiance, Taal unequivocally stated that he has no intentions of joining the NPP. He also asserted that he knows others within the UDP who share a similar stance, firmly ruling out any potential defections to the NPP.”I can say I am not going to the NPP, and I have no plans to join the NPP, and I know one or two people in the UDP who I can say will never join the NPP.”
