Ebrima Dibba, an executive member of the opposition UDP, was found guilty of charges under the incorrect part of the Criminal Code, according to Principal Magistrate Muhammed Krubally of the Banjul magistrate’s court.
Instead of dismissing the case, the magistrate stated he would ask the prosecution to revise the charge.

Section 51(1)(a) of the Criminal Code, Laws of The Gambia 2009, punishable by sections 52(1)(b) and (c), was used by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to prosecute Mr. Dibba with seditious intent.

According to the IGP, Dibba recorded and shared a WhatsApp recording in May 2024 in which he called the president “greedy, immature, rude, and foolish” in an effort to bring disgrace upon the president and the government. He declined to enter a plea because his attorneys maintained that Dibba was falsely accused and that the charges against him should be dismissed due to incompetence.
