According to a press release from the Ministry of Information, The Gambia’s government decided to re-gazette the Constitution in order to have it eventually presented to members of the National Assembly after carefully reviewing and considering the Draft Constitution that the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) presented on March 30, 2020.
According to the government’s statement, the Draft Constitution will be re-gazetted for three (3) months starting on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, and then for an additional ten (10) days, as mandated under the 1997 Constitution.
In accordance with “our established beliefs and values,” the Draft recognizes and acknowledges fundamental human rights and freedoms for all Gambians and non-Gambians alike. “The Draft as it currently stands, reflects our national values and ethos, and is consistent with the existence of The Gambia as a sovereign independent republican State with a multi-party democracy premised on democratic principles, and with periodic elections based on universal adult suffrage,” the press release stated.
The announcement goes on to say that the Draft Constitution of the Gambia provides term limits for Presidents and establishes a system of justice and responsibility for heinous crimes—firsts in the country’s constitutional history.
Additionally, the Press Release states that the public can access the Draft Constitution at the Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation and on the Ministry of Information’s website, and it guarantees that the government will update the public on the Draft Constitution’s progress.
