The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) has formally requested a police permit to conduct a peaceful protest in order to express their dissatisfaction and concerns regarding the recently amended 2020 Draft Constitution.

“The Coalition of Progressive Gambians is composing this letter to request a permit for a nationwide peaceful protest.” CoPG writes in a letter to the IGP that the proposed peaceful protest is scheduled to occur on November 7, 2024. The purpose of this peaceful protest is to convey our dissatisfaction and concern regarding the recently amended 2020 Draft Constitution.

The group expressed confidence that the IGP’s office will expedite the issuance of a permit in accordance with the General Orders and Section 2 of the Public Order Act No.7 of the 1961 CAP 22.01. They emphasized that this permit would enable them to exercise their constitutional rights, as detailed in Section 25(2)D of the 1997 Constitution, which guarantees their freedom to peaceful assembly and expression to voice their concerns.
