Gamtel, the state-owned telecommunications company established by an act of Parliament during the first republic, is entirely bankrupt.Since last year, employees have not been receiving their salaries on time. Those with salary accounts at Trust Bank are first paid lately, followed by those at Guarantee Trust Bank a day after, and finally those at Standard Chartered Bank and other institutions are paid in the third day. This delay in salary payments did not occur during either the first or second republic.Currently, many employees are being asked to sign voluntary retirement forms as part of a redundancy plan, resulting in restrictions that prevent them from accessing loans at banks or credit unions. Furthermore, Gamtel/Gamcel management has intentionally denied staff the 1×6 Tobaski loan.The staff are facing significant financial hardship.President Barrow’s administration has allegedly seized the gateway to misappropriate Gamtel’s funds.By means of bribery, the current government has allowed private GSM companies—Africell, Qcell, and Comium—access to the fiber optic cable.Gamtel/Gamcel employees are suffering under the current leadership of political appointee Lamin Tunkara, who serves as managing director.The management team, including directors, continues to misappropriate company funds through unjustified overseas trips.
