Corporal Baboucarr Njie of the State Guards Battalion has been arrested in connection with the foiled coup plot to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Adama Barrow.

A statement from the Office of President dated 22 December 2022 said he was apprehended at dusk on Wednesday 21 December 2022 and is currently detained.

The statement signed by the Gambia Government Spokesperson and Presidential Diaspora Adviser Ebrima G. Sankareh, reads: “The public is informed that one of the soldiers sought for alleged involvement in the foiled coup plot, Corporal BaboucarrNjie of the State Guards Battalion, was apprehended at dusk yesterday and is currently detained at a secure military location. 

“Meanwhile, the search for Badjie and Warrant Officer Class 2 Lamin Jadama continues.”
