Saturday, the second-in-command of the opposition Gambia Action Party (GAP) proclaimed his intention to join the governing National People’s Party (NPP).

Omar Beyai announced his decision during a holiday meeting with President Barrow in his hometown of Mankamang Kunda. He stated that his decision to join the ruling party was the result of months of contemplation, and that every politician serves the interests of their constituents and people.
“Therefore, I believe my people want me to join the NPP, which is why I joined. “It was not an easy decision, as I must acknowledge that when I needed help, especially politically, GAP came to my aid, and I owe them a debt of gratitude. However, I believe it is time for me to join the NPP so that I can assist the president in bringing about much-needed development,” he said.

Beyai from Bakoteh had campaigned for Barrow in 2021, taking time away from his international job.

“The time has arrived for me to end my tenure in the opposition and join the government. Beyai stated, “I have observed that the opposition parties lack a novel strategy to challenge the ruling party.

In addition, he cited the ongoing restructuring within the party and the establishment of political bureaus across the country as another reason for joining the NPP.

“Let us not pursue the UDP or NPP solution, but rather the correct answer. Let us not attempt to assign responsibility for the past. Let’s take responsibility for the future,” he said.
President Barrow, according to Beyai, requires more dedicated public servants who recognize that they cannot become wealthy in politics but can achieve grandeur and fulfillment through service.

Beyai responded that since he never sought for the position in the first place, resigning from GAP is superfluous. “I owe them no obligation to resign,” he declared.

President Adama Barrow conveyed his pleasure and welcomed Mr. Beyai to the NPP, stating that all members are treated equally.

“His decision to join the NPP clearly demonstrates his love for me and our country,” he said.

Mr. Barrow stated that his government is willing to collaborate with all Gambians and political parties in the national interest.

We have an open-door policy and do not discriminate against Gambian individuals. “I want to leave a legacy in Gambian politics, which is why we are building political bureaus across the country so that the NPP will continue to lead the country after I leave,” he said.

President Barrow stated that he will only consider his political career a success if the NPP remains in power after he leaves office.

“This is the agenda, and I have a hunch that someone from the NPP will succeed me. It could be anyone, he remarked.

Seedy Njie, NPP deputy spokesperson and deputy speaker, facilitated the meeting.
