In 2024 The W.H.O stated….

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies severe health workforce shortages (approximately 5.9 health workers per 10,000 people), chronic stockouts of essential medicines, and deteriorating physical infrastructure as the primary challenges facing hospitals in The Gambia. These limitations severely constrain the quality of primary and emergency healthcare nationwide.According to WHO and regional assessments, the major obstacles complicating the country’s healthcare delivery include:Workforce Shortages & Brain Drain: There is a critical lack of skilled professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses, and laboratory personnel), which is worsened by high attrition rates and brain drain. Many facilities rely on overstretched teams and international medical staff to meet basic patient needs.Stockouts of Medical Supplies: Frequent shortages of essential medicines, vaccines, and medical devices force many Gambians to rely on private clinics or seek costly medical care abroad, which deepens household poverty.Financial Barriers: Out-of-pocket health spending by households has tripled in recent decades. Because public hospitals often lack basic provisions, patients routinely face heavy out-of-pocket costs to acquire necessary prescription drugs and treatments.Inadequate Referral Systems: A shortage of reliable transportation and functional ambulances—especially in rural regions—creates severe geographic barriers to care. This causes delays that directly contribute to the country’s persistently high maternal and infant mortality rates.
