Sulayman Saho, a member of the Pan African Parliament and National Assembly Member for Baddibu Central, has urged the institution to enforce term limits on African presidents.

At the parliament’s ongoing session in South Africa, Saho stated that the high incidence of coups in Africa could be attributed to the excessive duration of power.

To prevent this, the Pan African Parliament must enforce term limits on African presidents in order to prevent coups and instabilities. “These challenges will be difficult for the continent to address if we fail to address the issue of overstaying in power,” he stated.

He maintained that the current generation of African leaders exhibits either no or minimal regard for human rights and sound governance.

“There has been little or no effort to address corruption, which is currently at an all-time high,” he stated.

In reference to the Africa Agenda 2063, a collection of initiatives that the African Union has proposed and is currently in the process of implementing, Hon Saho stated that parliaments and governments throughout the continent have a significant role to perform in supporting the realization of Agenda 2063.

He also stated that political parties are responsible for promoting the agenda.

“I believe it is crucial for political parties to incorporate Africa Agenda 2063 into their party manifestos and programs to guarantee that their policies and programs are consistent with the continental agenda.” He stated, “That is the sole method by which we can confront the obstacles we encounter as a continent.”

According to Hon. Saho, Agenda 2063 cannot be domesticated without the executive’s assistance.

“The executive must be more willing to invest in this laudable agenda, as we cannot have parliamentarians attempting to bring these issues to the citizens’ doorsteps when the executive is unwilling to provide support,” Saho continued.

According to him, parliaments will be incapable of accomplishing these objectives without the assistance of the executive. “When I refer to the executive, I am referring to the president. We must collaborate to ensure that this agenda is realized, as it will not be successful if we are not convinced by it,” he stated.

He also encouraged the African Diaspora to actively engage in order to facilitate the realization of the agenda.
