GAMBIA: POLICE ISSUED PERMIT TO A GROUP FOR PROTESTING AGAINST THE JUDICIAL OFFICERS BILL

A group of concerned citizens has been granted permission by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct a peaceful protest against the Judicial Officers’ (Remuneration and Other Entitlements) Bill, 2024, and the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Bill, 2024.

The protest is scheduled to take place on July 8, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 14:00 p.m. from Bond Road Junction (opposite Jah Oil) to the first entrance of the National Assembly (opposite the Christian Cemetery).

I acknowledged receipt of your letter dated 1% July 2024 addressed to the Office of the Inspector General of Police in relation to the above subject matter. Be informed that permission has been granted to you to go ahead with your peaceful protest slated for 8″ July 2024 commencing from 12:00hrs to 14:00hrs from Bond Road Junction (Opposite Jah Oil) to the first gate of the National Assembly (Opposite the Christian Cemetery),” the police said.

However, the permit comes with specific conditions:

A) That the peaceful protest is confined to the time schedule given in this approved permit.

B)That the peaceful protest starts from Bond Road junction to the first gate of the National Assembly.

C) That only a Five-Man delegation is permitted to deliver the petition to the representatives of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Justice respectively at the National Assembly grounds.

D) That the press briefing be held at the front gate of the National Assembly building opposite the Christian Cemetery.

  • That the peaceful protest is confined within the limits of the law.
  • That no derogatory words or remarks should be addressed to any person that will eventually result to the breach of the peace.
  • Failure to comply with these conditions will result to the revocation of this permit and or criminal prosecution.
  • By a copy of this permit, CP Banjul is requested to provide security for the protest, and you are advised to liaise with her on 3201678 for proper arrangement.
