During a recent event, President Adama Barrow expressed appreciation to the Gambia Navy for their diligent efforts in fighting illicit fishing inside the country. The occasion marked the transfer and activation of a patrol vessel provided by Spain to the Gambia Navy.

President Barrow praised the skill and commitment of the officers and ratings of the Gambia Navy at the occasion, recognizing their effective efforts in tackling the problem of illicit fishing. While commemorating this accomplishment, he also encouraged the Navy to expand their efforts in countering illicit ship-to-ship transfers of fuel and cargo at sea, as well as tackling issues pertaining to drugs and human trafficking, the smuggling of irregular migrants, and other maritime offenses.

This event allows me to express my unwavering belief in the skill and dedication of the commanders and crew members of The Gambia Navy. I am pleased to officially recognize the Navy’s accomplishments in combatting illicit fishing. Given the inclusion of these additional patrol platforms, I strongly encourage the Navy to actively combat the increasing occurrence of unauthorized and irregular ship-to-ship transfer of fuel and other commodities at sea. “Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the issues of narcotics and human trafficking, as well as the transportation of irregular migrants to Europe using unsafe locally made boats, along with other maritime offenses, demand increased scrutiny and more forceful measures,” said the president.
President Barrow affirmed the Navy that his administration is fully dedicated to providing continuous support for continuing efforts to enhance their capabilities. He stressed the significance of using the recently obtained patrol platforms responsibly to improve maritime security, promising ongoing assistance either directly or via collaborations with friends and allies.

During the ceremonial transfer of the GNS FANKANTA vessel to the Navy for operational use, President Barrow sent his best wishes to the officers and ratings, particularly those who would be serving on the new warships. He expressed optimism for favorable weather conditions and peaceful waters.
I guarantee the Navy that my administration will steadfastly support the continued endeavors to enhance capabilities, either via direct means or by leveraging our alliances and partnerships. As a member of the Navy, it is expected that you would utilize the assets under your control wisely and productively to ensure the nation’s desired maritime security goals. With great respect, esteemed individuals, I am pleased to formally transfer GNS FANKANTA to the Navy for operational purposes. “I extend my best wishes to the officers and ratings, especially those who will be sailing on these vessels, for favorable weather conditions and smooth sailing,” he said.

President Barrow expressed great satisfaction with the inclusion of the Fast Patrol Vessel in the Gambia Navy’s Fleet. He emphasized the vessel’s importance in supporting the government’s development strategy and its aspiration for the country to become very affluent and peaceful.
We really value national security. “This encompasses both the safeguarding of maritime security and the generation and protection of maritime resources,” he said.

President Barrow emphasized that the GNS FANKANTA, a High Endurance Fast Patrol Vessel, is a significant and historic addition to the Navy’s fleet. It is the first offshore patrol vessel to be acquired since 1989.

It is anticipated that this measure would greatly enhance the Navy’s fleet in order to reduce the many hazardous departures of migrants from The Gambia’s coastal waterways. “The GNS FANKANTA, a High Endurance Fast Patrol Vessel, is our Navy’s first offshore patrol vessel in over three decades,” he said.
