President Adama Barrow yesterday visited the survivor of the Sukuta shooting incident which claimed the lives of two personnel of Police Intervention Unit (PIU) of The Gambia Police Force (GPF).

The Gambian leader, accompanied by the country’s Police Chief and Cabinet ministers visited Nancy Jawo, who was the only survivor of Tuesday’s shooting incident. Nancy Jawo was admitted at the country’s main referral hospital – Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFTHS) as she recuperates from the shooting incident.

During the visit, the Gambian leader also commiserated with the victim and offered her an amount of One hundred thousand dalasis. The Point has also been informed that the Inspector General of the GPF also donated 25, 000 to the victim.

Tuesday’s incident is reported to be first of its kind in the history of the country where police officers on active duties have been gunned down by an unknown assailant.

Mustapha Mbaye, a communication specialist who was reacting to the shooting incident on his Facebook timeline, said: “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the brutal targeted killing of our law enforcement officers. While out there protecting lives and properties, the worst and most barbaric thing that could happen to them is being targeted by the very people that they are out there to protect.”

“I urge the government to provide all needed resources to hunt down the murderer/murderers and bring them to justice.”

“To the police command, put in place measures and strategies that would provide more protection for your officers, especially those in line of duty. This could include more protective gears including bullet proof vests, and arming some of them when and where necessary.”

“May Allah grant the fallen heroes Jan-nah and provide full and speedy recovery to the wounded officer,” he stated.

One Lamin S. Demba also wrote: “I call it a dastardly and cowardly act. An act that will negatively impact the country’s image to the outside world. As Forensic examinations at the scene continue, I pray the culprits will come to book as soon as possible. Such acts are simply barbaric and un-Gambian”

“To the Public, please be extra vigilant and help the police in sharing information and reporting anything suspicious immediately. May the souls of the fallen officers rest in eternal peace and the injured to recover swiftly.”
