The murder trial of Ousainou Bojang (1st accused) and Amie Bojang (2nd accused) is now underway. Ebou Sowe, the Sixth Prosecution Witness (PW6), told the court that Bojang confessed to him about throwing away the murder weapon while he was on the run.
Mr. Sowe, a resident of Sukuta in the West Coast Region (WCR) and a member of the Police Anti-incident Unit, described his role in the investigation, which included meeting with Ousainou Bojang and visiting the location of the incident.
Mr. Sowe testified about what happened leading up to the shooting, saying that he was in the Banjulinding Police Anti-Crime Unit at the time. He went into detail about his first impressions of the site of the incident and what he did after hearing that three policemen had been shot.
Three members of the Police Anti-Crime Unit stationed at the Sukuta Jabang Traffic Lights were shot and are now hospitalized; the identity of the shooter is unclear. I arrived at the crime site as one of the first responders after getting the information. When I got there at 21:45 p.m., everyone who had been hurt had already been sent to the hospital. Here, Sowe gave his testimony.
Interviews with witnesses, including the three troops implicated, painted a picture of a tall, slender man, according to Mr. Sowe. The troops also turned over empty cartridge casings that had been discovered there.
“As part of my duties as an investigator, I performed a preliminary study and spoke with witnesses, including the three soldiers, who all said that the gunman was a tall, thin man. Two empty bullet casings found at the site of the incident were turned over by the three troops. Mr. Sowe informed the court that when he questioned where the shooter was, the authorities claimed to have pursued him, but that he managed to escape at the first intersection toward the Sukuta end.
Bojang and Jatta were the names that Mr. Sowe remembered from his time at the murder site, but he couldn’t place the third soldier.
According to Mr. Sowe’s evidence in court, he gave the police forensic officer two empty bullet casings.
Until five in the morning on the same night, Mr. Sowe remained at the site of the crime.
The day after the shooting, Sowe went back to the crime scene to look at the supposed escape path the gunman used, according to his testimony.
Mr. Sowe and the forensic officers went back to the crime site at around 10:00 a.m. on the day after the shooting.
Their investigation into the shooter’s purported entry into the incomplete structure and his subsequent escape path was exhaustive.
A footprint was found, which led to the notification of the Forensic Officers for further action, according to Mr. Sowe’s report.
The Forensic Team found an empty gunshot casing, he said, when they were doing their investigation.
A team headed by Commissioner Sowe traveled to Giboro to fetch the suspect after receiving word that he had been arrested in Senegal when they were at the murder site at about 14:00 hours. in 8:00 PM, the group reunited with Ousainou Bojang in the Police Anti-Crime Unit. As soon as I arrived, the assembled panel—of which I was a member—questioned Ousainou Bojang, the first accused, about his role in the crime. After confessing to shooting the three cops, he fled to Senegal.
Ousainou Bojang admitted to wearing a white haftan and combat shoes when he hurled the murder weapon while sprinting when questioned about the cloth and the weapon. He claimed to have both pairs of combat shoes at his residence when questioned about them. Because of this, a group traveled to his Brufut home. The haftan he wore was found hanging on the TV stand during the search that ensued upon his arrival; he later verified its authenticity. The materials, including the Converse sneaker, were retrieved and photographed by the Forensic Team, according to Mr. Sowe’s testimony in court.
To add to the witness’s account, Mr. Sowe stated that the investigating team had been taken by Ousainou Bojang down the same escape path before returning to Anti-Crime.
Mr. Sowe claims that Ousainou Bojang then indicated a vacant plot of ground as the spot where the murder weapon had been discarded. Nothing was found on the empty lot after extensive searching.
It was assigned to Mr. Sowe, upon his return to Anti-Crime, to get Ousainou Bojang’s cautionary statement at about midnight. He let Ousainou Bojang know that he could stay quiet if he wanted to.
I proceeded to inquire as to his preferred language, and he responded in Wolof. Following this, he informed me that he could read and write. He asked me to write his statement even though I told him he could do it himself. “He requested that I grant him some time the following day to prepare his statement because he was exhausted; I did so, and he signed it,” Mr. Sowe said.
According to Mr. Sowe, more interrogation about Ousainou Bojang, namely the combat shoe, occurred on September 14, 2023. The detectives, according to Mr. Sowe, had doubts about the white Converse’s authenticity due to its impeccable condition. Afterwards, Ousainou let them know that he had, in fact, been wearing combat boots.
Following the conclusion of his interrogations, Ousainou Bojang admitted to wearing combat boots. At about 1400 hours, the suspect willingly escorted detectives to Brufut’s family residence, where the boots were found under the porch. Following his confirmation of his combat boots to the investigators, he was able to identify them. Therefore, the forensic team decided to use the boots as evidence. According to Mr. Sowe, another cautionary statement was acquired from Ousainou on September 14th while the inquiry continues.
On September 14, when the court asked Mr. Sowe how he obtained Ousainou Bojang’s statement, he said that he had followed a similar process and given a detailed explanation of what had happened. Mr. Sowe went on to say that the victims’ death certificates, which proved that the deaths had indeed taken place, were recovered on September 15.
On the same day that the whole confessional statement was collected, the investigations advanced. At this stage, an impartial witness by the name of Alieu Cham was present. Everything was done in the same way. After the statements were recorded and the narrations were finished. Even though the accused, Ousainou Bojang, has acknowledged his proficiency in English, I translated the full declaration into Wolof. According to Mr. Sowe, “I endorsed it and put my details as the recorder” after the independent witness corroborated it.
