Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad released a statement in which it revealed that the German authorities informed them at a meeting that “a neutral police unit has initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of force” that caused the death of a Gambian over the weekend in Germany.
Lamin Touray was fatally shot by German police on Saturday, March 30 in the city of Nienburg.
“The tragic incident has caused profound concern for the government of The Gambia. The ministry and its mission in Brussels are actively involved in discussions with the appropriate German authorities and the bereaved family in order to ensure a transparent and expeditious investigation is carried out.” The profound bereavement has not only impacted the family of Mr. Touray, but also the Gambian nation as a whole and its diaspora, particularly those residing in Germany. As a result, the government will collaborate extensively with pertinent German authorities to guarantee the preservation of justice and accountability in the matter. “Additionally, the Gambia Government wishes to remind all Gambians residing abroad to observe the law and contact the nearest Gambian diplomatic and consular missions for assistance whenever required,” the statement continued.
