Morocco’s Royal Navy unit intercepted on Thursday a boat carrying 62 would-be irregular migrants 240 kilometers south-west of Dakhla, according to a military source.

Of the migrants, 38 were from the Gambia, 22 were from Senegal, and 2 were from Mali.

The boat left the village of Kartong in Gambia on October 19 and headed for the Canary Islands, according to the same source.

He pointed out that the rescued migrants were transported safely to Dekheila port, south of Dakhla, before being handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie to carry out administrative procedures.

On the same day, the Royal Navy intercepted two other boats for illegal migration. One of them was carrying 141 Senegalese migrants 140 kilometers south-west of Dakhla.

The second boat boarded 274 illegal migrants, including 200 from Senegal, 66 from the Gambia, three from Guinea, two from Mali, and one from Sierra Leone, in addition to two corpses.

All these would-be irregular migrants had reportedly sailed from the Senegalese coast towards the same destination of the Canary Islands.
