The APRC Condemns The Kanilai Incident

The spokesperson of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), Hon. Amul Nyassi, has condemned today’s incident in Kanilai, involving United Democratic Party (UDP) patrol team and an angry mob.

“Political parties are for all communities. They should be accorded that mutual respect,” the Member of Parliament for Foni Kansal told Freedomnewspaper while making it very clear that “there should be no-go-area for any political party.”

An angry mob attacked today United Democratic Party (UDP) patrol team, chasing them out of former President Jammeh’s home village. The team was in Kanilai to monitor the voter registration exercise and found itself entangled in a fracas that has sparked wave of concerns across the political spectrum.

The Inter-Party Committee co-Chair said the APRC is also set to go across the length and breadth of the country to monitor the voter registration process.

He further stated that he does not see anything wrong with UDP going across every registration centres.

Hon. Nyassi confided to Freedomnewspaper that he is yet to get the full story, adding that he received one-sided information.

The spokesperson of the former governing party thanked UDP leader Ousainou Darboe for opening up to him about the sad turn of events that happened in Kanilai.

“As a Inter-Party Committee co-Chair, he can call me anytime there is an alarming situation,” he voiced out.

Contacted by telephone, Lawyer Almami F. Taal, confirmed the incident and said Ebrima Dibba, one of their party officials, got injured.

He even told this medium that the incident has prompted the country’s electoral body to put a halt to the registration exercise in Kanilai.

However, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesman, Pa Khan, said, in a rebuttal, that the voter registration process is still underway, calling it “very peaceful.”
